Horton's "The Christian Faith" released - Two Interviews

After much anticipation Michael Horton's systematic theology The Christian Faith has been released. The response has been outstanding, to the point where a number of sellers have reportedly sold out and are waiting for the second printing already!

Why such excitement about a systematic theology? In part because of praise like this from writers like Justin Taylor, "I think it will clearly be the best contemporary systematic theology from a Presbyterian-Reformed perspective."

Coinciding with the release of The Christian Faith professor Horton has done a number of interviews, including two with 9Marks and The Gospel Coalition. Below are excerpts from each, and I'd encourage you to read the text in full as both interviewers had excellent questions.

John Starke at The Gospel Coalition

“Starke: Are there shortcomings in contemporary theological studies that you hope The Christian Faith begins to remedy?

Horton: A lot of Christians today are put off by “systematic theology.” They may not see how it relates to the Bible (even biblical scholars are understandably suspicious of theologians!). Others may not see how it relates to Christian living or God’s vision for the church’s activity in the world.

My goal throughout this volume is to persuade fellow believers that sound theology arises out of the Scriptures, to the practical end of reconciling sinners to God in Christ, so that we worship the Triune God and love and serve our neighbors in the world. Theology fuels mission.”

“Leeman: You've written quite a few books. What's an example of something you say in this new theology that you've never written anywhere else?

Horton: I have an extensive treatment of the Trinity in this book.  I hope that everything I’ve written has been explicitly Trinitarian!  However, here I get into the biblical-theological development, the historical formulations and debates (ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary), and explore the radical implications of Trinitarian doctrine for all of our faith and practice. 

Then I read back this treatment of the Trinity into the doctrines that come before it and everything else after it. It’s really amazing to see how relevant this doctrine is for the whole sweep of doctrine and life.”
