After college I (Jeremy) worked for a Republican in the United States Senate.

Each morning my colleagues prepared for their day by reading the New York Post and The Washington Times.

Not me. I swapped those alleged “conservative” papers for The New York Times and Washington Post, publications that are sometimes called “progressive.”

Why?

I wanted to read “the other side.”

James Merrick, co-editor of Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy, shares similar advice for students. Because no matter where you’re studying there are people on the so-called “other side.”

As Merrick shares, “What I found helpful is to read those people who are being discussed and try and understand what they’re saying,” for two reasons:

  1. You become a better thinker by honing your argument.
  2. You become a more generous, thoughtful thinker.

Listen to Merrick share more and add to your summer reading list someone from “the other side” of whatever biblical or theologically issue you’re passionate about.
