How can Theology be Missional?
In his new work "The Mission of God's People" Christopher Wright extends and reshapes his work from the magisterial "The Mission of God" to answer a question we pass over all too easily - So what?
If we are doing the work of the Kingdom, why should we care about the navel gazing of theologians? Or, if we are studying the glorious doctrines of Scripture, why should we care about the distraction of missions?
In response to both these questions is Wright's call for a new integration of mission and theology.
In his words,
"There should be no theology that does not relate to the mission of the church - either by being generated out of the church's mission or by inspiring and shaping it. And there should be no mission of the church carried on without deep theological roots in the soil of the Bible.
No theology without missional impact; no mission without theological foundations" pg. 20
What do you think? Is it necessary to hold mission and theology hand in hand?
How can we best go about it if we should?
And, why can it be so hard to hold these two together?
Look forward to hearing your feedback, and if the conversation spurs you to pick up a copy of "The Mission of God's People" I'd expect you will end up as excited about this new book as we are!
