Introducing the one-volume edition of the NIV Application Commentary!

Categories Biblical Studies Commentaries (NT) Commentaries (OT)

The NIV Application Commentary on the Bible is a masterful blend of content written by today's top academics in a way that is compelling and easy to understand for anyone--no formal training or seminary degree required. The new one-volume commentary is intended both for personal study and for teaching preparation.

Concise commentary and background help the reader understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context. Clear explanations make it easy to understand matters related to grammar and the meaning of biblical words.

While most commentaries stop there, the unique format of The NIV Application Commentary on the Bible provides a bridge from the world of the Bible to our lives today, guiding the reader to powerfully apply the biblical message to contemporary situations, problems, and questions.

The NIV Application Commentary on the Bible

Decades of Scholarship

This one-volume abridgment has been years in the making and is built on decades of scholarship. It represents hundreds of thousands of hours of research, writing, and editing, from the first volumes published in 1995 (1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians) to the final volume released in 2021 (Ezra/Nehemiah). The labor of love can be seen in the list below, where each author is attributed to their work. The names represent some of the best scholarship over the past three decades. Review the list and be amazed! Some scholars wrote their volumes early in their career, and we now reap the benefit of a plethora of their works in the field. Others wrote near the end of their career, their contribution in the NIV Application Commentary series representing a lifetime of study.

The initial vision for the NIVAC series was aimed at the church. The volumes were to demonstrate excellent scholarship and at the same time provide tools and resourcing for pastors and interested laity. For this reason, the NIVAC volumes are touted as the best go-to complete commentary series for the church, and herein lies the heartbeat behind the one-volume here.

The Abridgement

By our estimate, the complete NIVAC series boasted over ninety million words and forty-four volumes. The abridgment here, into a single volume, now includes just over one million words. The goal was to retain the most useful and relevant content for each volume in proportion to the biblical canon, including the introduction, outline, original meaning, and application of each biblical book. NIV quotations and references have been updated and content in the “Contemporary Application” sections has been brought up to date where necessary.
