Description

Hebrews: Keep Pursuing Faith in Jesus Our High Priest

The letter to the Hebrews provides us with a rich and unique perspective on the work of Christ on behalf of his people. The unknown author casts his message in the form of a sermon that challenges believers to keep moving forward in their faith. Jesus, he emphasizes again and again, is our great high priest whose once-for- all sacrifice provides full and final forgiveness of sins. Negatively, this means we should look nowhere else for spiritual fulfillment. Positively, we are encouraged to enter fully into the realm of grace that has at its center our heavenly high priest. By presenting Christ’s work in the framework of the Old Testament sacrificial system, the author enhances our appreciation of all God has done for us in his Son and encourages us to take full advantage of his provision for our need.

Series Description

Designed for the pastor and Bible teacher, the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament features today's top New Testament scholars and brings together commentary features rarely gathered together in one volume. With careful analysis and interpretation of the Greek text, the authors trace the flow of argument in each New Testament book, giving readers the tools they need to properly understand and communicate the meaning of the text. Commentary on each passage follows a clear structure to help readers grasp the flow and meaning of the text:

  • Literary Context: A brief discussion of how the passage functions in the broader literary context of the book.
  • Main Idea: A one- or two-sentence statement of the big idea or central thrust of the passage.
  • Translation and Graphical Layout: Presents each commentator's translation of the Greek text in a graphical layout to help the reader visualize, and thus better understand, the flow of thought within the text.
  • Structure: Describes the flow of thought in the passage and explains how certain interpretive decisions regarding the relationship of the clauses were made in the passage.
  • Exegetical Outline: The overall structure of the passage is described in a detailed exegetical outline. This will be particularly helpful for those who are looking for a way to concisely explain the flow of thought in the passage in a teaching or preaching setting.
  • Explanation of the Text: Commentators examine words and images, grammatical details, relevant Old Testament and Jewish background to a particular concept, historical and cultural context, important text-critical issues, and various interpretive issues that surface.
  • Theology in Application: The theological message of the passage is summarized. The author discusses the theology of the text in terms of its place within the book and in a broader biblical-theological context. Finally, each commentator provides some suggestions on what the message of the passage is for the church today.

The Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series is the go-to resource for pastors and Bible teachers looking for deep but accessible study that equips them to connect the needs of Christians today with the biblical text.

Praise for Hebrews

Moo’s commentary on Hebrews is an extremely useful tool for close study of this powerful but enigmatic early Christian text. . . . He ably guides readers through the complexities of this unique reflection on the significance of Christ’s reconciling work.
—HAROLD W. ATTRIDGE, Sterling Professor of Divinity, Yale University

Moo’s gift for organizing a complicated text shines forth in the many outlines and charts and the way he patiently walks through all the pieces of the argument, allowing readers to follow him or see the precise moment in which they might make a different decision.
—AMY PEELER, Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies, Wheaton College

After having spoken in decades past, in many and various ways, about the Pauline corpus, at the zenith of his career Douglas Moo turned his exegetical prowess and theological acumen to Ad Hebraeos, giving New Testament scholars a commentary worthy to be placed alongside its most excellent predecessors.
—RADU GHEORGHITA, professor of biblical studies, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

Always clear, concise, and pedagogical, Moo makes it look easy as he takes us by the hand and walks us through all the complexities of this challenging letter. Eschewing easy answers, he weighs the evidence evenhandedly and offers cautious conclusions.
—SIGURD GRINDHEIM, professor of New Testament, Western Norway University

Anyone looking for a well-reasoned and carefully argued interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews in the broadly reformed, evangelical tradition will greatly appreciate the text-focused exegesis and theological applications offered by Moo throughout this commentary.
—DAVID M. MOFFITT, professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, St. Andrews University

Doug Moo has a knack for writing great commentaries, and this volume is no exception. Though conversant with complex issues in contemporary research on Hebrews and rigorous in its attention to exegetical details, this commentary pulsates with theological insight and pastoral warmth. I highly recommend it!
—GEORGE H. GUTHRIE, professor of New Testament, Regent College
